土,最原始也最尋常的材料,卻也最容易被忽略。建築師說過「建築來自材料的構築邏輯,創造建築就是賦予材料生命」。
我開始思考,如果材料本身具有構築性,土是否能自己生成構築關係,並在當代被重新理解。
土在台灣發展磚瓦產業。日治時期引進八卦窯,使磚窯從單一轉變為連續運作的系統,透過氣流循環提升效率。
在台灣的地質條件中,桃園龜山紅土層長期支撐磚窯產業的發展。
1970年代後大量磚窯停工,僅剩煙囪與部分結構,成為介於遺跡與閒置空間之間的存在。
基地位於龜山協和磚廠,曾是當地最大的磚窯場域,如今成為桃園僅存的一座八卦窯。
在快速都市化過程中,它逐漸從產業核心被推擠為都市邊緣。
因此,我回到磚窯生成的條件,重新看待「土」在場域中的角色。
以紅土作為紀念媒介,結合土與磚窯實驗教育。透過基地周邊開發挖掘紅土方運送至基地,再建立處理土方物件系統修復窯場。
修復策略是依據窯體不同完整度以「保留、嫁接與重構等方式修復」讓這世代人們了解窯體特殊構造及運作方式。
較完整段作為歷史記憶紀念空間:較破損段落透過新構造的介入,新舊構造與空間關係,
再次與當代生活、教育與社區產生連結,成為具有記憶、且仍然持續發生的紀念場域。

Earth, though basic and ordinary, is often overlooked. An architect said,
“Architecture emerges from the tectonic logic of materials; to create
architecture is to give materials life.” This project asks whether earth, with
constructive potential, can generate new spatial relationships and be
reinterpreted today.
In Taiwan, earth supported the brick and tile industry. The introduction of the
Hoffmann kiln during the Japanese colonial period transformed brick-making
into a continuous system, using circulating airflow to improve efficiency. In
Guishan, Taoyuan, red clay sustained this industry for decades. After the
1970s, many kilns closed, leaving chimneys and fragments of structures
between industrial ruins and abandoned spaces.
The site is Xiehe Brick Factory, once the largest kiln complex in Guishan and
now Taoyuan’s only remaining Hoffmann kiln. As urbanization pushed it to the
city’s edge, this project reconsiders the role of earth within the site. Excavated
red earth from nearby development is brought back, processed into material
elements, and used to repair and reactivate the kiln.
The restoration follows three approaches: preservation, grafting, and
reconstruction. Intact sections become spaces of historical memory, while
damaged areas receive new structures that reconnect the kiln with education,
community, and contemporary life. The result is a living memorial site where
memory and new activity continue to coexist.
