On the site, scattered hillside hotels to the north contrast sharply with the tea fields and low houses to the south. Yet, new architecture offers the potential to reinterpret and reconnect these opposing elements—linking environment and body through hot springs and a suspension bridge.
The roof extends as a cantilever, anchored by beams that pierce through the hot spring pools and counterbalance the weight of the slope. Following the beams, visitors pass through opposing dressing rooms, emerging at the curved water’s edge. Here, heat and steam gather, the gradual elevation change corresponds with the steady warmth, and the body begins an exploration of sensation shaped by the terrain.
At the deepest point, where the hot spring currents converge, the beams and slope pull apart, creating an ideal height for comfort. It is here that two paths intersect, offering a moment of choice and transition.
Above, a shifted roof and two gradually narrowing horizontal walls extend over the bridge, creating a tension that stretches the bridge deck into a gentle arc. As one crosses, the body follows the bridge’s descent, moving from above the roof to within its frame, shifting perception from upper body to lower body, sky to river valley.
Due to the topography, the hot spring and the bridge remain unseen from one another, yet their sensations overlap. Together, they narrate Dongpu, capturing the delicate interplay between people and nature—an architectural composition that edits the landscape into a moment both readable and immersive.
