How can architecture confront the uneven consequences of extraction across time?
Terrains of Guilt: Infrastructures for the Returning Mountains investigates East Kalimantan,
Indonesia, where more than 2,400 abandoned mining pits coexist with the construction of
Nusantara, the nation’s new capital. Positioned between ecological degradation and national
ambition, the thesis examines how development reproduces uneven, necropolitical conditions of
survival across territories and communities.
It argues that extraction persists long after excavation ends, distributing exposure,
contamination, exhaustion, abandonment, and survival unevenly across landscapes shaped by
demands for growth and resource accumulation.
In response, the project introduces Earth-Debt: an enduring obligation produced through the
displacement of land, matter, labour, ecology, and life across time. Rather than offering
environmental resolution, architecture becomes an instrument for exposing and spatialising
extraction’s afterlives across territorial, infrastructural, and domestic scales. Architecture cannot
redeem these conditions, but it can refuse to conceal the burdens that sustain contemporary
life.
