The Hsinchu Primary Substation is located at the main entrance of the Science Park and is also the intersection of the main roads for people to go to get off work. It is also adjacent to a high-density residential area behind it. Geographically, this is the core of the park and the urban boundary, but it is occupied by infrastructure dedicated to serving the science park. I want to discuss how to change people’s regulated lifestyles in contemporary industrial society when this land is returned to the city.
Whether at work or at home, everyone plays a role in society. Daily life is invisibly constrained like a machine, and the daily routine is just moving between two points. I tried to disturb these unchanging life trajectories by combining the Hsinchu Primary Substation, which is located at the midpoint of the commute, with the sports park and opening it to the city, so that people can have a moment to escape from the normal life during their daily commute and enter my design to enjoy the freedom.
How to transform the infrastructure that simply served the park in the past into a container that carries people freely; allowing urban activities to take place inside while coexisting with the substation, I began to discuss my graduation project.
My strategy is to establish the relationship between the two through the waste heat generated during voltage transformation. Taking the main transformer room as the main body, I clearly divide the circulation relationship between the three layers of the power area, the power-to-heat conversion, and the water area on the plane, and at the same time spatialize the heat conduction process so that it can be perceived by people. It connects human activities with substation facilities vertically and sutures them with the city horizontally; it criticizes the restricted living conditions and returns freedom to the routine. “Routine derailment” creates new possibilities in monotonous life.
