Living in such a high density and stressful city like Hong Kong, inhabitants lack sufficient activity space in
their small apartment and personal time after working overtime. Personal time is often consumed by
the daily chores such as cooking, laundry and showering.
Therefore, this thesis aims to create a temporary living space on water, far from the stressful land, for
people to ‘zone out’ and reset their minds for a short period, whether on weekends or a weekday night
by making daily chores into an enjoyable and relaxing experience.
Inspired by the kit of parts in toy models making, specific water related architectural precedents and
water vessels are dissected to create catalogues as a base for design development. From larger scale to
smaller scale, a mix of model making, collage with hand sketches and digital drawings are utilized
iteratively during the process of refining each space with specific activities.
“Architecture is not simply about space and form, but also about event, action, and what happens in
space.” Bernard Tschumi, The Manhattan Transcript.
The final floating retreat is presented as one of many configurations that the catalogue could create,
accommodating for different inhabitants’ preferences and living styles.
The ultimate purpose for this process is to enable inhabitants to detach from the stressful and material
lifestyle for a brief moment, and to immerse in a space surrounded by the ocean and eventually
rediscover joy within the ordinary acts of daily life.
