Education has always been regarded by governments as a

meritocratic social leveller towards national and economic

progress. Yet, in the course of developing select educational

institutions across the island to feed the demands of an aspiring

nation, we have unwittingly widened the social disparity of our

people. Elitism has seeped into and disparaged the meritocratic

education system. This design thesis posits the establishment

of a National School that operates on a distinct curriculum for

those who aspire to inculcate the core values of Singapore’s

exemplary nation building process. I propose 5 pillars of learning:

Personal Wellness, Culture & Civilization, Innovation & Creation,

Governance and Commerce. Singapore needs a National School

that focuses on the production of good citizens to be future leaders

regardless of their social background. The proposed site along

Grange Road had been Admiralty House, Raffles Institution and

is currently Headquarters for the Ministry of Education. I propose

for the critical re-evaluation of programmatic requirements in public

buildings especially schools due to the innate biases and apathetic

attitude we have towards established building types. It is through

such a discourse do we realise the significance and limitations of

architecture in hope for an egalitarian society.
