This thesis seeks to search for a prototypical housing hybrid
which attempts to bridge nature and culture by exploring
three major themes: layering, porosity, and exterior dwelling.
Forest Urbanism opposes monofunctional land use through
the layering of different programs, creating porous building
masses and elevating human dwelling skywards and freeing
up ground plane to be forested, resulting in an interconnected
urban lattice above a lushly forested ground. At unit scale,
exterior dwelling establishes a fluid transition between interior
and exterior, blurring the boundary between neighbors
creating ambiguous common territories which lead to
increased interaction and shared activities between
neighbors, consequently resulting in a more community-centric
neighborhood. This new urban-nature hybrid is a system that
has the potential to expand continuously, facilitating the
coexistence of residential complex and forest, providing
habitat for all people, flora, and fauna.
