The thesis seeks to repair the degraded mangrove condition
along the Straits of Johor brought upon by Iskandar’ s ram-
pant development. Compounding on this issue is the social op-
pression faced by the Orang Seletars living along the mangrove
edge, who are denied their indigenous rights and suffered evic-
tion and marginalisation under the waves of urbanisation. On a
macrolevel, these new settlements with the oyster farms floating
along the coast will function as wave barriers. These help to re-
duce wave actions and aid in the process of sedimentation which
in turn, allows more mangroves to take root. With newland nat-
urally building up from then on, it represents a notion ofland RE-
CLAIM – ation, as opposed to Iskandar’ s land RECLAMATION.
