If stability, permanence, and indestructibility define the essence of classical architecture,
then what does solidity mean today?
In contemporary living, rental studio apartments have become a common choice. As a spatial typology, they prioritize maximizing unit density, reducing individual living spaces to the bare minimum. The vertical continuity is disrupted, reinforcing the rigid and unchallenged boundary between private and public.
Rethinking from within, space is no longer a mere stacking of layers but an exploration of new possibilities between standardization and diversity. Within short-term leases of one to four years, minimal living spaces transform—expanding and contracting, shifting between private and public, inside and outside. The relationship between the individual and others is not fixed but in constant flux.
Here, inclined structures and staggered levels shape the living environment. The distinction between private and shared is never absolute but defined by how one inhabits the space: a walkway becomes a table, a structure doubles as a clothing rack. Architectural elements and everyday traces exist side by side—neither defining nor being defined, but constantly shaping each other.
Structural layers appear separate yet remain interdependent.
How do we perceive the totality?
How do we perceive its fragments?
How do we define the relationship between part and totality?
Perhaps it is a matter of perspective.
Unit and whole, part and part, space and space—none are fixed,
but instead left to be defined by those who dwell within.
And in that fluidity, solidity dissolves.
