Interrogating architectural ontology through the extreme landscape of the overwritten city, urban
theory serves as the starting point to define the overwritten field, the dormant field, and the liminal
entity. This extreme landscape unearths the slow-mutating operational system of the city.
Taking Tainan as a spatial sample, the keywords of its five operational mechanisms (Samples O-
1~O-5) emerge: the urban fabric is overwritten (Overwritten: To lay over and cover) through the
curatorial, the iconized, and the commodified. Each act of overwriting induces a corresponding
erasure. This disappearance causes commemoration to overflow, sedimenting into a geological
phenomenon.
Beyond Commemoration constructs an endless architectural exterior, simplified into an almost
primordial form (Samples L-1~L-5), providing an urban renewal strategy awaiting utilization by
the next wave of overwritism. Here, architecture ceases to act as a physical entity of protection and
resistance against time; instead, it is redefined as a liminal state devoid of definition—architecture
as an idea, and as an un-emerged prototype.
