Air, the invisible element swirling unassumingly around us has taken a turn for the worse. In the advent of air-conditioning air has been made tangible and by manipulating this life-giving element, human life is further stratified. With cool air held in higher esteem, it was made available only to a select few who could afford cooling technologies, ingraining the notion that access to conditioned air is ultimately conditional. Examining this theme in the city of contemporary Singapore, the air-conditioned nation, the proliferation and architectural implications of cool air is chartedexponentially against the country’s history and development.
Within this conditioned environment, we forget the unseen externality, heat emissions. The lesser sibling of cool air, heat is carelessly emitted as a waste product into the tropical heat, valueless and overlooked. This thesis looks at harnessing the heat reject from the District Cooling System, one of the more elusive pieces of cooling infrastructure, creating a space within the Central Business district for individuals of lower income. Two different environments of equality are created; the first a conventional understanding where heat is used through the stack effect to create a cool environment for the employability of the person, inducting them into the economic system and the second a space where heat is accepted into the individual’s body for the benefits the element may imbue one with and nothing is expected in return.
