The Uncanny of Heading South

The vast and horizontal landscape is a particular scenery which belongs to the southern highway, as if everything is stretched and infinite. Apart from the existing nature, two major artificial things form the highway landscape. One is the heavy and brutal infrastructure such as embankments and asphalts, embedded into the landscape through a large scale. The other is the light and messy object such as signs and corrugated structures, randomly growing on both sides of the highway.
Based on the Taiwan Railways Administration’s Hengchun branch line plan, I chose the projected station and nearby highway rest stops which are located between rows of mango trees and uncultivated land as my site. Through the observation of the current context, the architecture attempts to coexist with the seemly disorder relations of nature and artificial. Therefore, to unveil the uncanny from the endless journey heading south.
